New Year Resolutions:
Making an Impact With Our Lives
Part Three of Three
By Dave Andrusko
The best part of composing
two blogs, by far, is reading reader responses. Yesterday I
asked rhetorically," Have You Made Your Pro-Life Resolutions for
2011?" (www.nrlc.org/news_and_views/Jan2011/nv010311.html).
Yes, indeed, you have, judging by your answers.
Some,
to be honest, kind of circled around before landing. We've
aborted over 53 million unborn babies since 1973. Not
surprisingly, some correspondents vented on the cultural
attitudes that made this possible before assuring me they are
"doubling down" for 2011.
More typical was the very
first response, which made my day: "I just put down in my yearly
journal entry for goals -- that I want to do something
significant with my life: "Do something or find out something
worthy to spend rest of life pursuing & supporting." Support for
life issues is high on my priority list as a worthy pursuit.
Most respondents keyed in
on what I thought was the most important conclusion drawn by the
Barna Group, whose survey of attitudes toward New Year's
resolutions was the jumping off point for yesterday's blog.
While people had little faith they would actually follow
through, their resolutions were virtually free of mentions about
volunteering or serving others.
"Maybe most problematic,
Americans hinge their efforts at personal change by focusing
almost exclusively on themselves," commented David Kinnaman,
president of the Barna Group, "rather than realizing that
lasting change often comes by serving and sacrificing for
others."
That was not your
response.
One other related thought.
Rick Warren is famous for many things, probably most of all for
authoring "The Purpose Driven Life." I read his blog each day,
and, wouldn't you know it, this appeared today:
"To make an impact with
your life answer 3 questions: What needs to be done? Why not me?
Why not now?"
We know what needs to be
done--protecting the unborn and the medically vulnerable unborn.
We know who needs to do it--you and I And we certainly agree
there is no better time than NOW.
