As We Near the End of the Bush
Presidency...
Part One of Three
Editor's note. I appreciate
hearing from you at
daveandrusko@gmail.com.
In
Part Two, NRLC
Co-Executive Director Darla St. Martin lauds the
numerous invaluable contributions President
George W. Bush made to the cause to which you
and I have dedicated our lives. The depth and
breadth of that heart-felt assistance will be
made even clearer by the contrast we know will
characterize pro-abortion President-elect Barack
Obama. Part Three
is the President's "Sanctity of Human Life Day"
Proclamation.
It's no secret that the
amusingly mislabeled "mainstream media"
unthinkingly loathes President Bush as much as
it reflexively lauds Obama. But the waves of
criticism aimed at Bush as his presidency comes
to an end are one thing.
The cloying, annoying
infatuation with Obama as he is about to take
office is quite another.
The honeymoon (the term
commonly used to characterize the current
spate-free environment) that Obama is currently
experiencing with the press not only cannot
last, the quickness with which it will sour will
be remarkable. Let me explain why.
Watch Obama for two minutes
and his contempt for journalists is almost
impossible to miss. He picks and chooses whom he
will take questions from (an increasingly narrow
subset); what subjects he will entertain (as
opposed to those he declares off-limits with
thinly-veiled scorn); and is already giving
reporters a heads-up about those areas he
expects them to stay away from (loosely defined
as honoring his "privacy").
Combine this with the way he
glowingly talks about how he employed various
technologies to create a new kind of grassroots
politics to win the election, and how he will,
as President, mobilize that base to create
pressure to enact what Obama desires. Doesn't
sound like there is much room for, or need of,
the "Media Establishment."
My guess is that Obama
believes the traditional media is an add-on, at
best, an annoying and irrelevant relic, at
worse. At a time when the traditional media is
clearly on the defensive, it'll be fascinating
to see how many settle for crumbs out of
pathetically misbegotten sense of gratitude and
how many quickly get up on their heels to
complain.
Please take the time to read
Parts Two and
Three. Have a
great weekend.
