"A Cause Rooted in Human Dignity and Appealing to the Best Instincts of the American People Cannot Fail" -- Part One of Two

Editor's note. I'd love to hear from you at daveandrusko@hotmail.com.

What a day yesterday!  The overriding good news was the enormous turnout of young people at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. Even the pro-abortion Washington Post's story was (aptly) headlined, "A Youthful Throng Marches Against Abortion."

And the President's remarks were a model of inspiration. Like everyone else in the gigantic crowd, I was deeply moved. (See below and Part Two.)

But unfortunately there was also bad news. NRLC-endorsed Fred Thompson, a strong pro-lifer, dropped out of the race for President.

Heading into the January 29 Florida primary, Thompson's departure leaves four major GOP candidates: Sen. John McCain, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and pro-abortion former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

For all the uncertainty about who will be the Republican nominee, there reminds for pro-lifers a stunning overall clarity to the race for the White House. Giuliani is unabashedly pro-abortion and must not be allowed to snare the Republican nomination and all three Democratic candidates are hyper-pro-abortion--one just as bad as the other.

As we've often talked about in this space, Sen. Clinton, Sen. Obama, and former Sen. Edwards dual for the mantle of the candidate pro-abortionists ought to love the most. To that end Clinton's campaign issued a statement yesterday on its web site with the headline, "On Anniversary Of Roe, Hillary Announces Agenda For Reproductive Health Care"

The statement quotes Hillary as saying the following:

"When I'm President, I will appoint judges to our courts who understand that Roe v. Wade isn't just binding legal precedent, it is the touchstone of our reproductive freedom, the embodiment of our most fundamental rights, and no one - no judge, no governor, no Senator, no President - has the right to take it away." Naturally, a couple of paragraphs later, she links this abortion-now-and-forever statement to "honest and complete sex education and expanded access to contraception and family planning."

The statement also highlights the continuing laying on of hands by a veritable who's who of the Abortion Establishment. Clinton has now been endorsed by a rogue's gallery of militant pro-abortionism: WCLA - Choice Matters, National Organization for Women PAC, EMILY's List, Women's Campaign Forum, National Women's Political Caucus, and the Women's Political Committee.

Part Two is the complete text of President Bush's remarks yesterday to the March for Life. Let me conclude Part One with this memorable excerpt from President Bush's last remarks to a March for Life from the Oval Office.

"Building a culture of life requires more than law; it requires changing hearts," the President said. "And as we reach out to others and find common ground, we can see the glimmerings of a new America on a far shore.

"This America is rooted in our belief that in a civilized society, the strong protect the weak. This America is nurtured by people like you, who speak up for the weak and the innocent. This America is the destiny of a people whose founding document speaks of the right to life that is a gift of our Creator, not a grant of the state. …

"As you give voice to the voiceless I ask you to take comfort from this: The hearts of the American people are good. Their minds are open to persuasion. And our history shows that a cause rooted in human dignity and appealing to the best instincts of the American people cannot fail."

Tomorrow we'll talk about the raft of Oscar nominations for the movie, "Juno."
