Pro-Life Billboard Taken
Down in New York City
By Dave Andrusko
It took just three days
for the forces of political correctness, censorship, and a
threatened demonstration to convince a Louisiana-based company
to pull a billboard in New York City featuring a young
African-American girl with the tagline, “The most dangerous
place for an African-American is in the womb."
According to the local CBS
News affiliate, “The Rev. Al Sharpton praised the decision and
canceled plans to protest the billboard.”
Hal Kilshaw, spokesperson
for Lamar Advertising, yesterday denied that the controversy
surrounding the billboard, produced by the pro-life group Life
Always, was a factor in the decision to pull the ad, according
to CNN. He cited “concerns for public safety.”
The group responded on its
website. “Life Always strongly disagrees with Lamar Outdoor's
decision to remove the billboard in [Manhattan’s ]Soho
[neighborhood], but the billboard's message holds true, and
truth has a place in the public square.” The intent “is to call
attention to the tragedy and the truth that abortion is
outpacing life in the black community.”
The ad has special
relevance in New York City. According to the New York City
Department of Health, in 2009 almost exactly 60% of African-
American babies were aborted. In other words in, three
African-American babies were aborted for every two live births
in NYC.
Dr. Alveda King, the niece
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., denounced what she described as
“an outrageous act of censorship.”
“This billboard should be
posted in every city of the country,” she said. “And it should
provoke outrage in the African-American community—not because it
is racist, but because of the truth it reveals; the truth that
is being kept from the African-American community.”
The message of this
billboard, Dr. King added, “is totally accurate. The most
dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb! It’s a
travesty of justice that it is being taken down.”
