Mobile Ultrasound System Approved by FDA
Part Three of Four

By Luis Zaffirini

The FDA has approved the first smartphone-based commercial ultrasound system. Called MobiUs, the device was developed by Redmond, Washington, based company Mobisante. All one needs is the device itself, some gel, and a compatible smartphone, and, voilą, you have a mobile ultrasound system.

The device has the capacity to revolutionize the mobility and availability of ultrasound in ways unimaginable a mere five years ago. With wi-fi connectivity, this device makes it easy to share ultrasound images between medical professionals and also with parents.

And when it's that easy to share with parents, these images will spread quickly among family and friends. Yes, the window on the womb is getting larger and larger.

Always-on mobile telephony and Internet connectivity grow by leaps and bounds daily. The potential of paring this technology with ultrasound is nothing short of revolutionary.

It will shrink our prejudices against human life as it broadens our understanding of it. And the greater our understanding, the more diminished our ability to dehumanize the unborn child.

That is a plain and simple fact.
