House Action About to Begin on Two Important Pro-Life Bills
Part One of Four

By Dave Andrusko

Good evening and thanks for being part of the discussion. Part Two tells the incredible story of abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who made millions yearly performing abortions, asking for a public defender as he goes on trial of charges of eight counts of murder. Part Three looks at the preposterous charge that PPFA is "under siege." Part Four talks about an amusing story that discusses how President Obama has snookered the press, even as it contribute to it. Over at National Right to Life News Today (www.nationalrighttolifenews.org), we bring you the latest in what will be a long series of excerpts from the report of the Philadelphia Grand Jury that investigated Gosnell. One day after commemorations on the 100th birthday of pro-life President Reagan I bring you another excerpt from his wonderful book, "Abortion and the Conscience of a Nation." We end today with a spectacular video. To do the best job possible I need your feedback on both Today's News & Views and National Right to Life News Today. The House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution will hold a hearing Tuesday on "The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), co-chair of the Bipartisan House Pro-Life Caucus. The following day the House Subcommittee on Health, chaired by pro-life Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.), will hold a hearing on another major NRLC priority bill, the "Protect Life Act."

Last month Congressman Smith said of the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act--a government wide prohibition on taxpayer subsidization for abortion and conscience protections with durable remedies--that "President Obama has said he wants abortion to be rare. To Mr. Obama I say, 'here is a bill for you.' Even the Guttmacher Institute, the former research arm of Planned Parenthood, confirms that taxpayer funding bans are a proven abortion reduction method.

According to Guttmacher, studies show that when abortion is not publicly funded, abortions in the covered population are reduced by roughly 25 percent."

The Protect Life Act is very similar to the "Stupak-Pitts Amendment," which NRLC pushed during the 2009-2010 debate over health care legislation. This amendment ultimately was blocked by opposition from President Obama and the congressional Democratic leadership. Backed by NRLC and other pro-life groups, this bill would prohibit pro-abortion subsidies and mandates in every component of the massive 2010 health care law.

"Public opinion is strongly against federal subsidies for abortion, and any member of Congress who is truly opposed to federal funding of abortion will vote for both of these bills," said NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson. "If President Obama seeks to obstruct these bills, that will provide additional glaring evidence that his professions of opposition to public funding of abortion are phony."

Following up on promises made last year, Republicans have already forced a vote in both the House and Senate on a repeal of ObamaCare. On January 19, the Republican-controlled House passed the bill to repeal "The Patient Protection and Affordability Care Act" by a vote of 245-189. On February 2, the Democratically-controlled Senate turned back Republican efforts --51 Democrats rejecting the attempt and 47 Republicans in support. (Sens. Mark Warner and Joe Lieberman were absent .)

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told reporters after the vote, "We think this is just the beginning," adding, "This issue is still before us, and we are going to go at it in a variety of ways."

"The case against this bill is more compelling every day," McConnell said during the debate. "Everything we learn tells us it was a bad idea. That it should be repealed and replaced. The courts say so. The American people say so. Job creators say so. It's time for those who passed this bill to show that they've noticed. Let's take this opportunity."
