All PPFA Affiliates to be
Required to Perform Abortions
Part One of Three
By Dave Andrusko
If
you've had the opportunity to read the many insightful analyses
provided by NRLC's Dr. Randall K. O'Bannon, it'll come as no
surprise that Planned Parenthood is going to "standardize its
operations" and reportedly require all affiliates to perform abortions.
That news spilled out in a story written by a local Texas
newspaper covering the decision of what is now known as the
Family Planning of the Coastal Bend to drop its affiliation with
PPFA.
"We have never provided
abortions," CEO Amanda Stukenberg told the Corpus Christi
Caller. "Our position is that if that is a need in your
community, fine. There are far greater needs in our area than
abortion. We feel that women here have options. We don't need to
duplicate services."
The change of direction in
PPFA's operations have been clear for several years. They are
merging smaller clinics, that aren't as profitable, building
highly profitable mega-abortion clinics. That's one way of
juicing up the bottom line.
The other is so-called
"web-cam" abortions, intended to reach "clients" out in the
hinterlands. The abortionist is not actually in the same room
with the woman. He communicates by means of a video conferencing
system, electronically opening a drawer from which the woman
takes out the two drugs that make up the "RU-486" chemical
abortion regime: misoprostol and mifepristone.
More large (and
profitable) abortion clinics, plus a massive outreach to what
PPFA likes to call "underserved" populations=a huge upswing in
income for what is already a $1 billion corporation.
Now, the insistence that
all PPFA affiliates perform abortion, which are very profitable.
The story in Corpus
Christi Caller says that PPFA did not return phone calls and
that it is unknown if any other affiliates are following Family
Planning of the Coastal Bend in un-affiliating.
As we discussed last
Friday, PPFA just released its 2008-09 Annual Report for filling
in some of the gaps in a "Factsheet" produced in September.
Combined, we know (to mention just two conclusions)
*that abortions had jumped
a whopping 6% to 324,008 while the number of adoption referrals
had dropped by more than 10%. We don't have reliable national
count yet for 2008, but considered as a percentage of the latest
national annual abortion figure the Guttmacher Institute
reported for 2005, this would make Planned Parenthood
responsible for 26.8% of all abortions performed in the U.S.
This easily cements their place as America's top abortion chain.
* that PPFA received $363
million from the government (in the form of grants and
contracts. PPFA's 2008-2009 Annual Report does not break out
what portion of that $363 came from the FEDERAL government. But
the attached chart does show the correlation between increased
government funding to PPFA and increased abortions conducted by
PPFA.
