A Different Kind of Christmas Carol
Part Three of Three

By Dave Andrusko

In the past I've occasionally written about Kurt Kondrich and his daughter, Chloe. Kurt describes himself as the proud papa of "a beautiful daughter who has Down syndrome, and she has been a priceless Blessing to our family and community." Over the years he has written many beautiful columns, driven to defend children like Chloe by the sickening realization that 90%+ of children diagnosed in utero with Down syndrome are aborted.

His column today is titled "A Down syndrome Christmas carol," an illusion to Charles Dickens' classic story, "A Christmas Carol." It is, in many ways, a perfect metaphor, the awakening of a long dormant conscience which, once aroused, softens a calloused heart.

I will not spoil Mr. Kondrich's story by summarizing it here. You can read his loving and very brief, 245-word-long essay for yourself at http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/kondrich/101202.

For pro-lifers the message, although tied specifically to children targeted for death because of their "imperfections," has universal application to all unborn babies lost to abortion.

There are many lessons from Dickens' story of recognition and redemption that apply perfectly. At the top is what can happen even to a cold-hearted, embittered old man when he is reminded of what he once was and forced to see how his indifference to the suffering that surrounded him made this rich man, in human terms, a beggar.

Can a comparable spiritual awakening like that happen to us, a nation that aborts 1.2 million unborn babies each and every year? If so, what will it take in order that there comes a day when our culture looks back at these last forty years and asks in horror and shock, "We did WHAT to WHOM?" What "spirit" will take us by the hand and shows us our handiwork-- a war launched against our own children that has taken over 54 million lives in just 38 years?

Just like you, I would do whatever I can even if I thought such a day would never come. But I do believe it will. Why? Because of what your faithful witness, ears are being unstopped, hearts softened, and eyes opened.

And I remain confident that because of your gentle insistence that there must be a better way, someday our nation's Scrooge-like behavior and attitude toward the littlest Americans will be but a distant memory of a time that we have come to understand as a stain on our collective conscience.
