Seeing Ultrasounds and Choosing Life
Part Two of Three

By Dave Andrusko

How do we know that when women see their unborn babies via an ultrasound it makes a difference? Negatively, by the fierce--and I do mean fierce--opposition pro-abortionists present to legislation giving women this opportunity before they abort. Even by their standards, the level of hostility is amazingly.

Positively, by what counselors at women helping centers tell us--and what common sense (always at a premium) practically screams out. A baby can remain somewhat of an abstraction, an oversight instantaneously righted when a mom sees that vibrant, active human being busily growing in his/her sanctuary.

And that doesn't even count the powerful stories that occasionally make their way into the media, such as "Twins saved from abortion after mother sees ultrasound," which appeared today in the Arkansas Catholic (http://www.arkansas-catholic.org/article.php?id=2370).

Take five minutes to read Phyllis Hemann's story and it will make your week. All I will say here is that sidewalk counselors, led by Maria Maldonado, prayed for 19-year-old Daniella as she entered the abortion clinic in West Little Rock this summer--prayed that she would ask to see an ultrasound.

Daniella did--and learned that she was carrying twins AND that their expected due date was December 25. According to Hemann, after that Daniella told them she was "out of here."

What had Daniella seen on the ultrasound screen? A "truly priceless sign -- two heartbeats that this young mother-to-be could not extinguish," Hemann writes.

"'I cry sometimes because I feel like I had no other options that day,' Daniella said. 'Now, I can't believe that I even thought about it. Now, I can't wait to have my kids.'"

There is much more to this wonderful story, including how Maldonado and other volunteers then "organized a baby shower for the young mother and her unborn twins Nov. 13 and drove 130 miles to Lake Village, the mother's hometown, for the party."

This story perfectly illustrates why NARAL is working around the clock and around the country to squelch crisis pregnancy centers, to try to litigate these mom-and-pop shops out of existence. Many CPCs now have ultrasounds and virtually all do what they can to help the young women during their pregnancies and to direct them to social services for assistance after the baby is born.

To the pro-abortion mind, no good deed should EVER go unpunished.
