Readers Respond to Column about Pro-Abortionists and the Hyde Amendment
Part Two of Three

By Dave Andrusko

Thanks and gratitude go out to our readers, all of whom are wonderful, for taking time to respond to yesterday's blog, "Why the Hyde Amendment So Angers Pro-Abortionists." I had a few ideas why this measure which prohibits funding of abortion with money from the annual Health and Human Services appropriations bill so sticks in the craw of the pro-abortion set (http://www.nrlc.org/News_and_Views/Nov10/nv113010part3.html), but your responses were superior.

For example, as one respondent noted, the Hyde Amendment was not only a very significant life-affirming measure, it was the first time the Movement was able to dig in to thwart the momentum of the Abortion Machine. Pro-abortionists had won with Roe, of course, and followed up with actions and decisions that demonstrated that Roe v. Wade was every bit as radical as pro-lifers said it was (and pro-abortionists denied it was) in 1973. The spell was broken.

The late Rep. Henry Hyde

Another pro-lifer began by referring to the reason I talked about the Hyde Amendment --an upcoming event sponsored by the pro-abortion Center for American Progress (CAP) titled "Separate and Unequal: The Hyde Amendment as a Civil Rights Issue"--and drew an interesting conclusion.

Pro-abortionists like to picture themselves as "champions" of the poor and the indigent, who are disproportionately women of color. But contrary to what the CAP argues, by refusing to allow Medicaid dollars to be used to fund the deaths of millions of unborn babies, the Hyde Amendment does not "intentionally discriminate against poor women" but gives their unborn babies a greater chance to be born. This is no small matter, given that it is not by accident that Planned Parenthood has such an aggressive outreach to African-American and Hispanic women. It's been that way since the days of Margaret Sanger.

A third explanation came from a friend who wrote, "I think the pro-abortion people know in their hearts that abortion is wrong. The law of God is written on their hearts, too." He went on to cite a couple of instances where (to their great chagrin) the truth had slipped out from prominent pro-abortionists.

He then added, "So the real reason they must keep firing away at the Hyde Amendment is that the Hyde Amendment calls abortion wrong. This they cannot abide."

Thanks to all who wrote back. Keep 'em coming.
