Planned Parenthood Adds to Number of Bay Area Abortion Clinics
Part One of Three

By Liz Townsend

Editor's note. Good evening and thanks for reading Today's News & Views. Part Two is based on reader response to a post yesterday asking the question what is it about the Hyde Amendment that so rankles pro-abortionists? Part Three reports on the move of abortionist Martin Haskell. Over at National Right to Life News Today (www.nationalrighttolifenews.org), we look at how a pro-abortionist wants us to "think about abortion." The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children reports on its outreach to vulnerable women in Great Britain while Wesley Smith writes about a really scary development. Rather than leading to a reduction of abortion facilities in the San Francisco area, Planned Parenthood Federation of America's (PPFA) August decision to sever ties with a local affiliate has instead increased the number of abortion mills.

PPFA withdrew affiliation from Planned Parenthood Golden Gate over allegations of administrative and fiscal mismanagement, according to the Bay Citizen.

Instead of disbanding, the group has now been renamed Golden Gate Community Health and continues to perform abortions in six Bay Area clinics, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported.

In addition, Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific, which retained PPFA affiliation, is now expanding into areas previously covered by Planned Parenthood Golden Gate. A new clinic opened in Santa Rosa November 29.

As of now, it will only refer for abortions, but plans are to perform abortions there soon. "We will start here and grow as needed," Heather Estes, president and CEO of PP Shasta Pacific, told the Press Democrat.

The Shasta Pacific affiliate is scheduled to open another clinic in San Francisco in January, and is also looking for a location in Mendocino County, according to the Press Democrat.

Another affiliate, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, is taking over territory in San Mateo and Alameda counties, the New York Times reported. Deborah Ortiz, its vice president of public affairs, told the newspaper that it plans to open two new full-service clinics within the next year.

While continuing to perform abortions, the newly renamed Golden Gate Community Health is being investigated for its business practices while under the Planned Parenthood banner. The Times reported that the Internal Revenue Service has interviewed a former employee about "the financial relationship between the organization and its political arm, as well as about accounting practices."

Interim chief executive Therese Wilson told the Times that a forensic accounting firm has looked at the records and found "inaccurate information" but no evidence of malfeasance.
