Thompson Endorsed By NRLC Affiliates

Last month, when National Right to Life endorsed pro-life former Senator Fred Thompson for President, we explained that NRLC's decision was informed by a careful assessment of the Republican candidates' stand on the issues, voting record, and ability to defeat both pro-abortion Rudy Giuliani in the race for the party's presidential nomination and whichever pro-abortionist Democrats throw up against him in the general election

That is why yesterday's endorsements of Thompson by two NRLC state affiliates--South Carolina Citizens for Life (SCCL) and Wisconsin Right to Life (Wisconsin RTL)--are so crucial.

Given the political calendar, SCCL's endorsement is particularly telling. The Palmetto State holds its primary January 19--the first large state to make a decision following the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. Currently, Mr. Thompson is in a spirited contest with three other GOP candidates--Giuliani, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"As the first major South Carolina grassroots organization to enter the Republican presidential race, South Carolina Citizens for Life is proud to endorse Fred Thompson," said Holly Gatling, Executive Director. "Our endorsement is a testament to Senator Thompson's long-standing pro-life record, his commitment to unborn children, and our belief in his ability to win."

Likewise, "The Wisconsin Right to Life PAC is proud to endorse Fred Thompson," said Susan Armacost, WRTL/PAC Director. "Fred Thompson's stellar 100% right to life voting record and his personal commitment to the protection of human life are deeply appreciated by our organization. We strongly believe in his ability to win the presidential election."

If there is anything that is obvious to even the most casual observer, it's that the 2008 race is more fluid than any presidential nominating process in recent memory. Just a couple of weeks ago, Giuliani was comfortably ahead of his pro-life rivals, while pro-abortion Sen. Hillary Clinton seemed to be invulnerable. Both have since fallen back to earth, not only in Iowa and New Hampshire, but nationwide as well.
