Nearly Half Say Abortion Too Easy to Obtain; 54% Say Abortion Morally Wrong Most of the Time
Part Two of Three

By Dave Andrusko

The first sentence of the Rasmussen Reports survey tells us that "Nearly half (48%) of U.S. voters continue to believe that an abortion is too easy to obtain in this country, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey." Twenty-three percent believe the level of difficulty is about right and 15% believe it is too hard.

While helpful, there are other results in the survey of 1,000 likely voters that are at least as illuminating, including the complementary finding that 54% agree that "abortion is morally wrong most of the time." This compares with 32% who disagree.

What else?

  • "Women (53%) feel more strongly than men (42%) that abortions are too easy to get," according to Rasmussen. In addition, "58% of women believe that abortion is morally wrong in most cases, compared to 49% of men." This affirms yet again that women are more in the pro-life column than are men.

  • "Sixty-one percent (61%) of voters say abortion is at least somewhat important as an issue in terms of how they will vote in November, with 33% who say it is Very Important," according to Rasmussen. "Thirty-seven percent (37%) say it's not very or not at all important to them as a voting issue." More important is that "Pro-life voters, however, are twice as likely as those who are pro-choice to say abortion as an issue is important to how they vote this fall." (What percent that represents was not explained.)

  • But perhaps the most interesting result (because so suggestive) is that while "Ninety-one percent (91%) of pro-life voters say abortion is morally wrong most of the time," according to Rasmussen, "61% of those who are pro-choice do not share that view." Does that mean that most or all of the remaining 39% of self-identified pro-choicers say abortion is morally wrong most of the time?
