Central Florida Abortionist has License Suspended for Fourth Time
Part Three of Three

By Dave Andrusko

The Florida Board of Medicine has suspended for a fourth time the license of Central Florida abortionist James Pendergast. NRL News has written about Pendergast, the owner of five abortion clinics, numerous times. (See, for example, http://www.nrlc.org/news/2001/NRL01/news.html; http://www.nrlc.org/news/2001/NRL02/news.html; and http://www.nrlc.org/news/2002/NRL03/news.html).

According to News 13 in Orlando, Pendergast's "tumultuous medical career" includes having his license "suspended for doing illegal third trimester abortions," and "distributing drugs without a license." In addition, according to reporter Kelli Cook, in 2004 Pendergast "was caught up in what prosecutors alleged was extortion in Marion County surrounding his abortion clinic there. He pleaded guilty to impeding justice."

Pendergast's latest suspension is for one year. He will pay a $10,000 fine and, according to Cook, be required to take a course in record keeping. The latest brush with the law involved "incidences related to a troubled 31-year-old employee," Cook reported. The Florida Board of Medicine said Pendergast "Allowed the woman to administer narcotics to patients although she had no license to do so "Knew she abused drugs but gave her 'free reign' to order drugs under his name "Prescribed steroids for the woman without medical justification ."

What is even more troubling is that Pendergast's suspensions will run concurrently, meaning once "they're finished, he'll be free to practice in the state of Florida again," Cook reported.

Aaron Liberman, the chairman of the Department of Health Management and Informatics at the University of Central Florida, described the situation as a "walk-up call" and the punishment "lenient." He told Cook, "Unfortunately, in the state of Florida over the past many years, we have not seen the enforcement and the rigor (in) some other states like Iowa, Indiana, (and) Minnesota."
