National Right to Life PAC endorses in West Virginia's First and Third Congressional District
Part Three of Three

WASHINGTON – The National Right to Life Political Action Committee (NRL PAC) today endorsed four candidates in order to replace Congressmen Alan Mollohan (D-WV 1) and Nick Rahall (D-WV 3) in the House of Representatives.

For the primary election to be held on May 11, 2010, NRL PAC endorsed Republican David McKinley and Democrat Mike Oliverio in the first congressional district ; and Republican Elliott "Spike" Maynard and Democrat Bruce Barilla in the third congressional district.

The National Right to Life Political Action Committee endorsed Mike Oliverio in the Democratic primary in West Virginia's first congressional district. Shown with Mr. Oliverio are (left) Karen Cross, NRL Political Director, and Dr. Wanda Franz, president of NRLC.

"Congressmen Alan Mollohan and Nick Rahall voted for the most abortion-expansive single piece of legislation ever to reach the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives," said National Right to Life Political Director Karen Cross. "Instead of standing firmly for life, they voted for the legislation based on a meaningless piece of paper and a promise from a president whose extreme pro-abortion position has been known from the beginning."

Reps. Mollohan and Rahall recently voted to enact President Obama’s massive health care legislation (H.R. 3590), although it lacked the pro-life protections that were necessary to prevent future federal funding of elective abortion and federal subsidies for private insurance plans that cover elective abortion (some of which will be administered directly by the federal government). Instead, both touted an essentially meaningless executive order signed last month by President Barack Obama.

In a March 21 statement, National Right to Life noted that the order “was issued for political effect. It changes nothing. It does not correct any of the serious pro-abortion provisions in the bill.”

"It is disappointing that Congressmen Mollohan and Rahall chose to ignore the will of their pro-life constituents in West Virginia and voted for a bill to subsidize health plans that cover abortion," added National Right to Life Executive Director David N. O'Steen, Ph.D. "NRL PAC will oppose their re-election and will continue to remind pro-life voters how their congressmen voted on this critical issue as they head to the voting booth."
