Stupak Challenger Benefits from Incumbent's Reversal
Part Two of Two

By Dave Andrusko

This might fall under the category of turnabout is fair play, chickens coming home to roost, or any of a number of catch phrases that capture the sense of a bill coming due. Over the past couple of days, Politico and the Boston Herald have run columns about Dan Benishek, the Republican challenger to Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mi.) They are very much worth reading and you can find them at www.politico.com/news/stories/0310/35259.html and www.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/op_ed/view.bg?articleid=1243263&format=text.

It would be impossible to miss the possible parallels between what happened a few months ago in Massachusetts and what could happen next November in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. As you probably remember, Republican Scott Brown caught a wave, a rising tide of opposition in his state to (in particular) ObamaCare. In a stunner he defeated Democrat Martha Coakley, seen as the prohibitive favorite to win in an overwhelmingly Democratic state.

At the last possible moment Stupak reversed field to vote in favor of ObamaCare, unleashing a tidal wave of opposition. "Benishek said he definitely plans to campaign on repealing the health care bill," Politico reports.

Since Stupak's turnabout, Benishek, a surgeon and a political neophyte, has become the beneficiary of a wave of financial support and a huge infusion of Facebook "friends." What was a kitchen table campaign is quickly taking on the trappings of a serious challenge to Stupak.
