What You Can Do to Make a Vitally Important Difference on November 2

By Dave Andrusko

Editor's note. This is the page one story from the October issue of NRL News.

As this edition of National Right to Life News goes to press, we are just weeks away from the pivotal November 2 off-year elections. Like sailors clinging to a capsized vessel, pro-abortion Democrats are frantically attempting to avoid drowning under a tidal wave of voter backlash. While most media talk is about the powerful impact of a weakened economy, the Democrats' plunge actually began with the public's deep resentment at having ObamaCare shoved down its collective throat.

How best to understand the stakes? Consider the price the unborn have paid because the Presidency in the hands of a man joined at the hip to the Abortion Establishment, aided and abetted by two uber-partisan pro-abortion Democratic leaders--Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Obama's forays into abortion advocacy are many and varied, but we rightly focus on the laughably misnamed "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010"–ObamaCare. We know the truth, but even now much of the "mainstream media" insists on recycling the same half-truths and mis-truths all (ironically) under the guise of clearing up "misunderstandings."

For example, driving into work yesterday I heard a radio reporter impatiently state (as if there can be no possible disagreement) that ObamaCare does not subsidize abortion and does not prevent access to lifesaving medical treatment. In fact, it does both, meaning ObamaCare indiscriminately attacks vulnerable life at both ends of the age continuum.

So, the question before the house is not whether you and I and every pro-lifer in the United States of America knows that ObamaCare is an evil that we must repeal and replace. Rather it is how hard are we willing to work between now and the first Tuesday in November? How much does it matter?

The list of what you and your family can do is as long as your arm, but let me mention just a few, starting with are you registered to vote? Are all pro-life members of your house and extended family registered–and know where they vote?

If your state offers early voting (or absentee voting or in-person absentee voting), take advantage of that opportunity, especially for those who may have difficulty getting around on November 2. And if you are in Washington or Oregon, all of Oregon and all but one county of Washington votes by mail! (For full information, go to www.nrlc.org/News_and_Views/Sept10/nv091710part2.html)

Contact your state National Right to Life affiliate to see how you can best assist in the efforts it is planning this fall. If you do not have the number of your state affiliate, please contact the NRLC State Development Department and we can get it for you (202-626-8809). It is important to coordinate your activities with your state affiliate to maximize pro-life efforts. Your affiliate is likely to have information that you lack. Working together always accomplishes more.

Volunteer your time and talents (as an individual, not as a chapter member!) in a local pro-life candidate's campaign (stuffing envelopes, ringing doorbells, raising money, assisting on position papers, staffing telephone banks, distributing yard signs and bumper stickers, etc.). There are countless things that need to be done. Campaigns are chronically short on help. You can be that vitally important help. Also, encourage pro-life teens from your community to volunteer as well.

As an individual, volunteer to assist your right-to-life political action committee in making local "get-out-the-vote" calls and distributing literature the weekend prior to the election. Since these calls ask the pro-lifer to vote for specific pro-life candidate(s), this activity must be done as individuals and not as your chapter.

Make sure that all pro-lifers in your community know their elected officials' stands on the abortion issue (which are determined through position papers, voting records, candidate questionnaires, etc.) and the position of the candidates challenging them. If you do not have this information, contact your NRLC state office or contact NRLC at 202-626-8809, or 202-378-8843. This information can be distributed by your chapter and can also be distributed in pro-life church bulletins.

You get the picture. A focused, energized pro-lifer is the unborn child's best friend. Always has been, always will.

Be sure to contact your state NRLC affiliate to see how you can be of help. If you have any questions about that, or anything else, call 202-626-8809, or call 202-378-8843.
