A Satisfied Customer

By Randall K. O'Bannon, Ph.D., NRL-ETF Director of Education & Research

You remember that TV commercial where the guy comes out and says, "I'm not just the president of the Hair Club for Men, I'm a customer"? Well, I kind of felt like that guy on Sunday. Not because I'm a candidate for hair replacement, but because I finally got a chance to personally use and promote a product the National Right to Life Trust Fund has been talking about for the past year.

Last Sunday, I was asked to speak to the high school seniors at our church about sex and the life issues. To transition from the talk about the biblical perspective on sex to the discussion of the life issues like abortion, stem cell research, and euthanasia, I used the new six minute "Infinite Possibilities" DVD from the Trust Fund which is based on our best selling fetology booklet "A Baby's First Months."

I can't tell you how proud I was to be associated with such a top-notch production. Here's why.

The production values are first rate. This is a professional production all the way through. The video, the pictures, the music, the narration, the editing are all the highest quality. This looks like something you might see on the Discovery Channel, just shorter and without the commercials. This will compare favorably with anything else out there on the market.

The video is nonpolitical. Now I like a good public policy argument as much as the next pro-lifer, and I'm committed to seeing all human life fully protected by law. But there are times and places where a piece that explicitly takes a public policy position will not be welcomed or allowed. You can take "Infinite Possibilities" any place, anywhere without fear of stepping on any toes. You can take it to church, to the library, you can send it to your "pro-choice" friends.

The video does not mentions abortion. It implicitly makes the case in a very intriguing and persuasive way: It isn't that life is valuable because abortion is bad, but that abortion is bad because life is valuable. And that message of the preciousness of human life comes through quite clearly.

"Infinite Possibilities" make beautifully plain the absolute wonder of human development in the womb. Through computer animation, through fetal pictures, through video, the viewer sees the growth and development of the unborn child from the moment of conception all the way up to the moment of birth. And I had a small hand in checking some of the details in the narration and I can assure you that it's not only beautiful, but scientifically accurate.

You might think such a piece like this would perhaps only be suitable for adults or older teens, but it is so sensitively and thoughtfully done that you can probably feel comfortable showing it to even the youngest kids. There's nothing explicit here, and kids will probably identify with some of the young voices speaking in the film. The most you'll find is a computer animation of sperm fertilizing the egg, but all the mechanical explanations and talk about the "birds and the bees" is left to mom and dad.

The genius of the video is that you won't have to make an argument. The video speaks for itself. When the viewer sees for herself how amazingly intricate human life is from the very beginning, no one has to be told that abortion is wrong. You'll know that it could never be right to destroy such a wondrous miracle, a life so carefully crafted, so fearfully and wonderfully made.

As I watched those teenagers watching the video, I saw that they were engaged, that they were paying rapt attention, and I was proud. Proud to be associated with a fine product like this. Proud to be part of an organization like National Right to Life that has produced and distributed a quality DVD like this. Proud to be associated with fine people like Darla St. Martin, NRLC Co-Executive Director, Pam Rucinski (who wrote the script as well as producing and directing the video), and the team of people who had the vision and the drive to come up with something like this. And glad to have had the chance to make a difference in the lives of those teenagers.

That's why I'm not just someone who promotes the Trust Fund's "Infinite Possibilities" DVD, but I'm also a satisfied customer.

The DVD is very economical and easy to order. You can get a copy from the Trust Fund for just $10, shipping included, and you can use it over and over. Details can be found at http://nrlc.org/InfinitePossibilities.asp.
