Groundswell of Public Opposition to ObamaCare
Provides Educational Opportunity for Pro-Lifers

By Jonathan Rogers, NRLC Field Coordinator

Pro-lifers know that one of the best ways to establish a pro-life presence with those around us and to educate the public is to use the attention of larger news issues as a springboard for activity. The public’s ever-mounting opposition to ObamaCare affords a wonderful opportunity.

To recap, there’s been talk lately about how many Democrat candidates currently see political survival this November and support for the Health Care Law as two mutually exclusive propositions. Indeed, the public perception of the Health Care Law remains a lead-weighted lifeline, and most Democratic candidates are swimming away as fast as they can. The self-talk that Democrats employed--that once the general public got used to the legislation, it popularity would rise—rings more hollow by the day.

Just the other day Dave Andrusko highlighted a recent piece in Politico by Jennifer Haberkorn describing how five of the 34 House Democrats who voted against Obamacare are running ads touting their opposition, while none of the 219 Democrats who voted “yes” on Health Care are running television ads on that fact. Haberkorn quoted a Democratic strategist who said that running such a pro-Health Care ad would be “political malfeasance” right now. (See http://www.nrlc.org/News_and_Views/Sept10/nv090710.html.)

The apprehension of pro-Health Care candidates is a response to continued and very widespread public disapproval of President Obama’s “signature domestic policy accomplishment.” And it’s not just disapproval of the law; 58% of the public favors outright repeal (http://www.nrlc.org/News_and_Views/Aug10/nv083110part3.html).

This enormous groundswell of public opposition to ObamaCare suggests an educational opportunity we should be following up on. People need to be reminded that among the many reasons ObamaCare is a disaster is that it is riddled with provisions that promote abortion and guarantee rationing.

Now is a good time to be focusing our efforts on educating, and identifying pro-lifers. At county fair booths, church functions, fall rallies, work, around the neighborhood. One of the easiest things we can all be doing is circulating petitions right now.

NRLC has a new “Repeal” petition circulating, urging “all U.S. Senators and House Members to repeal or correct all abortion-related problems and rationing” in Obamacare. Circulating a petition is a chance to identify who in your community is pro-life and might be willing to support your efforts. It is also a chance to educate the uninformed by explaining the problems in the law. You can download and print the new petition, here.
