Re: Fishing Where the Fishes are
By Dave Andrusko
This
weekend Comedy channel's Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are
conducting what Stewart humorously insists is a non-political
rally in the nation's capital. Well, that's fine, but even the
New York Times had to chuckle over that one.
I mention it today for two
reasons: who is coming on Saturday and pro-abortion President
Barack Obama's appearance Wednesday on Stewart's program.
For our purposes, the primary
suspect is (who else?) NARAL. A few days ago NARAL sent out a
"Media Advisory" that began, "NARAL Pro-Choice America Joins
Forces with Lady Liberty to Reach Out to Voters During the
Stewart-Colbert Rally to Restore sanity: Group to promote
pro-choice voting guide, urge attendees to text VOTE to 49609
for information on federal candidates' positions on choice."
Lady liberty? "Volunteers dressed
in Statue of Liberty costumes will hand out stickers that read
'Vote Pro-Choice. Politicians make Crappy Doctors." And where
did this oh so clever slogan come from? It was "created by an
activist" and "selected by a popular vote of NARAL Pro-choice
America members from across the country."
Such class. But I digress.
I have no real idea who will show
up tomorrow, or how many. Both Stewart and Colbert are very
popular with audiences that certainly skew young but have plenty
of older people watching as well. Everyone assumes the audience
would be largely pro-Obama and /or largely pro-Democratic, which
may or may not be true.
Certainly that was the assumption
President Obama labored under when he went on Stewart's "The
Daily Show" Wednesday night. His appearance was part of his
unapologetically targeted offensive--to reach young people
and/or racial minorities--in hopes of reaching constituencies
that voted for him in 2008, and motivate them to vote next
Tuesday. (Where else would he go with his overall personal
approval numbers in the low 40s?)
I watched the interview on
Thursday morning. For our purposes, two items just jumped out.
Everyone understands that falling
all over yourself in apology hardly qualifies as a strategy to
energize your "base." But it's important to remember as we look
past November 2 that Obama really does seemed to have learned
absolutely nothing.
He clearly has no idea why he has
sunk from Olympian heights to mediocrity on his way further down
the ladder.
Anyone who thinks he will pull a
Bill Clinton- "reach for the middle"- in the second two years is
sadly mistaken.
The other quality--and it is most
assuredly related--is how prickly and thin-skinned Obama is. I
don't think he's been told "no" a lot in his adult life.
That he attributes his
misfortunes to everything under the sun but the wisdom of his
policies tells you all you need to know about what will come
next.
