President Bush's 'Decision
Points' is a Big Seller
By Dave Andrusko
I was zipping around various
online sites trying to purchase a CD for our first grandchild
when I ran across a link to a story in USA Today.
"These
are turning out to be very happy holidays for George W. Bush,"
write Anthony DeBarros and Carol Memmott. "Decision Points,"
President George W. Bush's very readable and informative memoir,
is #1 on the New York Times best seller list for hardcover
non-fiction. Published November 9, the book has sold a whopping
1.75 million copies.
The book is also "the
best-selling title this holiday season," Kathryn Popoff,
Borders' vice president for merchandising and trade books, tells
USA Today. "People, regardless of their political philosophies
and persuasion, want to read about what our last president has
to say."
And this bonanza, in spite of the
hostility of the usual suspects.
We wrote about "Decision Points"
the week it came out (http://www.nrlc.org/News_and_Views/Nov10/nv111010.html).
As I observed at the time (having
seen only selected passages), there are revealings, including
those of special interest to pro-lifers.
But as I subsequently read the
book, two qualities really struck me. First is how respectfully
President Bush treats even those who were the most hysterically
vicious toward him while he was in office. For the professional
Bush-haters, that, of course, counts for nothing. For everyone
else, this respectfulness speaks volumes.
Second, Bush came to his pro-life
policy conclusions not only because he was (as he said many
times) a "pro-life President," but because he weighed the
evidence. Mr. Bush reasoned his way to a decision, which is the
antithesis of the attitude attributed to him by his anti-life
opponents.
For what it's worth, if you are
looking for a book to buy your friends and family for Christmas,
I would highly recommend "Decision Points."
