A Canard Older Than the Hills

By Dave Andrusko

Pro-abortion Colorado Senator Michael Bennet

In Part One of  "Today's News & Views," I talked about those whose honest assessment or pro-abortion convictions lead them to announce that abortion is a non-factor this year, or a distraction, or even a hindrance to pro-life Republicans. Pro-abortion Democrats, facing a yawning gap in public opinion polls, think they can peel off voters who otherwise wouldn't give them the time of day.

How? By dusting off their worst scare tactics in a last-minute attempt to convince voters their pro-life opponents have just escaped from the asylum.

There's the usual over-the-top stuff. For instance, writing in the New York Times yesterday, Kirk Johnson writes about "One contentious commercial in New York [that] shows women in a police lineup who, the voice-over says, would be turned into criminals if Carl P. Paladino, the Republican candidate for governor and abortion opponent, beats Andrew M. Cuomo, the Democrat."

Other pro-abortion candidates, such as Colorado Senator Michael Bennett (appointed in 2009 to fill the Senate seat vacated by Ken Salazar), are "trying to tie social concerns to economics," Johnson writes. How? "Mr. Bennet on Tuesday unveiled a new agenda to advance opportunities for women, as business owners, workers and mothers. Protecting their rights to safe, legal abortion, he said, was part of that same fight."

So get a loan from the Small Business Administration, or get an abortion from Planned Parenthood--six of one, half dozen of the other. Try telling the 27 million unborn females that have been aborted that their deaths "advance opportunities for women."

Since "abortion rights" is a "flash point," if pro-abortion Democrats can tar Republican pro-lifers with the dreaded "extremist" brush it will "rally their base and attract moderate Republican or independent women -- a slice of the electorate that is even more coveted than in years past," according to Johnson.

This canard is older than the hills, but, any port in a storm, I guess. My strong belief is that more voters will vote for a candidate because he or she is pro-life than will vote for a candidate because they are pro-abortion. This has been the case for 30 years.

And we accomplish that not with fear-mongering, as our opponents do, but by simply telling the truth.
