Growing List of Charges Against
Abortionist Steven Chase Brigham
By Dave Andrusko
The
headline in the Associated Press story which ran yesterday is
blunt: "Charges added against doctor accused of shuttling N.J.
patients to Maryland for late-term abortions." It also captures
one of the many ways the 56-year-old Brigham has attempted to
make a mockery of state laws.
We always knew that Brigham did
late, LATE abortions, but of late we are learning that he would
take the lives of babies mere weeks away from delivery.
The AP story, which I saw at
nj.com, is based on documents filed last week by New Jersey's
attorney general Paula Dow, who is trying to suspend or revoke
Brigham's license. As we discussed over the last few weeks,
Brigham is accused of "shuttling" patients from one state to
another to evade state laws.
In addition to all the other
charges, "The documents show Brigham performed an abortion in
August for a 35-year-old Canadian woman who was 33 weeks
pregnant," the AP reported. "The fetus had Down syndrome."
Once again the allegation is that
Brigham, who is not trained as a gynecologist and obstetrician,
started the abortion in New Jersey "then had the woman drive
herself to Maryland where the procedure was completed,"
according to the AP. "Brigham does not hold a Maryland medical
license, the state's records say."
Brigham does not have admitting
privileges at any New Jersey hospital. Brigham sees patients in
private offices in New Jersey, but none of the sites are
registered ambulatory care facilities, according to the story.
However, state law requires that
post-21-week abortions must be performed in a hospital or a
licensed ambulatory care facility, "and must have permission
from the state medical board," the AP reports.
